Eagles Claim First-Ever Super League Victory
A momentous occasion unfolded at the Virginia Show Centre, as McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles claimed their first-ever Women’s Super League victory, overcoming Midlands Park Portlaoise Panthers with a 70–57 triumph.
After two challenging opening rounds — a narrow 61–65 loss at Trinity Meteors and a 55–72 defeat at home to Brunell — the Eagles demonstrated remarkable resilience, composure, and growth, delivering a breakthrough performance before their passionate home crowd.
The Panthers came out firing, dominating the opening quarter 24–12, with Jessica Fressle spearheading the attack with six early points. Yet the Eagles’ response was both swift and spirited.
In the second quarter, Soleil Barnes and Niamh Tolan combined to spark a decisive 9–0 run, tallying 12 points between them and cutting the deficit to just five points by halftime (32–37). The Virginia crowd could sense the momentum beginning to shift.
The third quarter proved pivotal. Energised by their supporters, Katie O’Sullivan seized control, orchestrating a stunning 13–0 run that turned the game on its head. O’Sullivan was unstoppable, finishing with 21 points and four steals, inspiring her teammates with her leadership on both ends of the floor. Alex Mulligan and Ciara Tolan were immense with vitals scores and thwarting Panthers offence.
The Eagles entered the final quarter with a narrow 52–51 lead and never looked back. Barnes continued her excellent form with 18 points, while Tolan dominated under the boards with 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals. Inside, Mazzie Harris posted a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, anchoring the Eagles’ interior presence. Off the bench, Ciara Brady provided crucial energy and composure during key stretches.
Although Fressle’s efforts yielded a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Panthers, the day belonged to Cavan. The Eagles connected on six three-pointers, moved the ball with precision, and tightened their defence at critical moments.
