Eagles Soar to Home Win in the Super League

There was electricity in the air at the Virginia Show Centre as McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles thrilled a packed home crowd with a commanding 82–69 win over Catalyst Fr. Mathews.

The Eagles came out flying, feeding off the energy of their supporters to open up a 25–10 first-quarter lead. Soleil Barnes was in unstoppable form early, knocking down shots from all angles on her way to a sensational 33 points, including seven three-pointers.

Fr.Mathews basketball club Cork., though, showed their pedigree in the second period. The experienced Gráinne Dwyer battled hard inside, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while American duo Laila Blair and Lexie Givens led a spirited comeback. Blair was excellent throughout, pouring in 26 points, with Givens adding 17 as the Cork side cut the deficit to just three points by halftime.

The third quarter was a tense back-and-forth affair. Fr Mathews briefly edged in front, but the Eagles responded with grit and poise. Katie O’Sullivan was immense under the boards, recording a double-double (14 points, 14 rebounds), while Mazzie Harris brought energy and physicality, contributing 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Then came the turning point — a breathtaking 17–0 Eagles run in the fourth quarter that blew the roof off the Show Centre. With Barnes leading the charge, Ciara Tolan and Alex Mulligan added timely scores (8 points apiece), Niamh Tolan chipped in with 7, and Ciara Brady provided valuable defensive stops off the bench. Youngster Caitlin Carroll also impressed, coolly sinking both her free throws and gaining valuable court time.

The win gives the Eagles great momentum heading into a well-earned two-week break before travelling to Waterford to face the Wildcats on November 22nd.
