Eagles Show Fight and Growth Against League Leaders
The Eagles faced one of the toughest challenges in the Women’s Super League as they travelled to Dublin to take on table-topping Killester, knowing it would be a major test in their first season competing at Ireland’s highest level.
The Eagles could not have asked for a better start, knocking down three early baskets to race into a 6–0 lead and immediately putting the hosts on notice. The opening quarter was competitive throughout, with the Eagles matching Killester’s intensity before the home side edged ahead 27–21. Killester found their shooting rhythm in the second period, opening a gap to lead 59–35 at halftime, but the Eagles continued to compete and stay committed to their game plan.
After the break, the Eagles showed resilience and character, battling hard to close the gap, and despite Killester maintaining control to lead 84–64 heading into the final quarter, the visitors never dropped their heads. A strong response in the fourth period, including a spirited 9–2 run, underlined the determination and fight within this Eagles group.
Individually, there were many standout performances for the Eagles. American Soleil Barnes was outstanding offensively, leading all Eagles scorers with an excellent 27-point display. Captain Niamh Tolan once again led by example, contributing 16 points while setting the standard with her leadership, work rate, and physicality at both ends of the floor. Eagles' second American, Mazzie Harris battled relentlessly in the paint, pulling down an impressive 13 rebounds against strong opposition.
Katie O’Sullivan was tireless throughout, finishing with 8 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists, and her powerful drives to the basket repeatedly caused problems for the Killester defence. Sophie Staunton continued her encouraging return to form, playing a significant role and adding 9 points, while Alex Mulligan was her usual dependable self, contributing 9 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists with composure on both ends of the court. Young Omotese Osunde Okperan once again gained valuable Super League experience, continuing her development against elite opposition.
Killester, as expected, showed their quality on home court, led by American guard Sam Haiby, whose exceptional shooting night saw her finish with 40 points. She was well supported by Ieva Bagdanaviciene and Michelle Clarke, while former Eagle Laura McFarland also featured for the hosts.
While not offered as an excuse — Killester were excellent — Coach John Stephens will be hoping for positive news regarding the injuries sustained by Ciara Tolan and Ciara Brady, with the Eagles eager to welcome both back into the lineup in the coming weeks.
A challenging night against the league leaders, but another important step forward in the Eagles’ debut Super League campaign. The lessons will be taken, the positives built upon, and this group will continue to grow together 💙🦅
